Ductless Heating and Cooling Systems

Ductless heating and cooling systems are also known as ductless heat pumps or ductless mini-splits, or multi-split systems. They are considered to be one of the highly efficient HVAC solutions on the market. A typical ductless system consists of four main components:

  • an outdoor unit with condensing coil, an inverter-driven compressor, an expansion valve and a fan to cool the condenser coil,
  • an indoor unit which contains an evaporator and an oscillating fan,
  • a refrigerant line-set made of insulated copper tubing
  • a remote control and/or wall-mounted unit to control the settings.

Ductless systems use similar technology to a traditional heat pump to distribute warm or cool air throughout a certain area. The outdoor unit produces the cold refrigerant which is then used to cool the air in the house.  The difference is the ductless heat pump pumps the cool air directly into the small indoor units located in certain areas in the house instead of using an air handler and ductwork to distribute the cold air inside. This way each split AC unit operates as its own air handler and delivers hot or cold air only when it is required for a particular zone.

In a typical home with a central-air system there can be anywhere from 20% to 30%  loss of energy through ductwork. Unless your ductwork has just been installed by trusted Carolina Forest heating and cooling specialists there are probably some air leaks or dust and dirt buildup somewhere in your ductwork which makes your whole-house HVAC system work harder than it needs to and waste energy in the process. With a ductless system there is no energy loss through ducts and any air leaks are very unlikely since a ductless unit require only a three-inch hole to be drilled into the wall.

Moreover, ductless units have inverter-driven compressors which means the speed of the compressor motor is adjusted based on the heating or cooling needs. A compressor of a typical air conditioning unit operates only at a single speed which means the motor is either on or off. With a ductless system, regardless of the temperature settings, the unit operates at lower or higher capacity but it doesn't shut down. A standard AC unit operates at a full capacity and then it shuts down when no longer needed. On and off cycles use up most of the energy which is why a ductless unit is considered to be highly energy efficient.

In a multi-split system each unit controls the temperature of a particular zone. Thus, if there are certain rooms in your home which are usually not in use you don't need to cool or heat them unnecessarily. Similarly, if you have a lot of cooking to do you can lower the temperature in the kitchen without freezing your family in the living room.

Better Air Quality

As we know, the air inside your home can often be more contaminated than the air outside. Indoor air pollution can drastically worsen allergy symptoms and cause many serious medical conditions. That is why it is so important to change your air filters on a regular basis and have your ductwork professionally cleaned.

Many ductless air conditioning systems come equipped with multi-part filter systems which absorbs odor-causing gases, reduce allergens in the air such as dust and pollen as well as germs, bacteria and viruses.

Quick and Easy Installation

Putting in new ductwork or replacing old ductwork is a major operation which can turn any house into a construction zone. One of the greatest advantages of a multi-split system is the fast and easy installation. The installation process involves mounting an indoor and outdoor unit, and connecting refrigerant lines. Make sure you always hire a certified, reliable Carolina Forest heating and cooling company since an uneducated installer may easily overestimate your home's cooling needs leaving you with an inefficient system.

Ductless Heating and Cooling System Considerations

High efficient ductless AC systems have many benefits but there are also some considerations. If you replaced your whole-house air conditioning system with a ductless system the upfront cost would be tremendous. There is no doubt your energy bills would drop significantly, but because of the high initial cost you may wait a long time for the return on your investment.

Modern ductless systems offer a variety of styles and colors. Nevertheless, some homeowners may not consider an indoor AC unit mounted to the wall aesthetically pleasing.

Is Ductless Heating and Cooling System Right for My Home?

There are many scenarios where a mini-split system is a perfect choice. For example, if you're planning an addition to your home such as a bonus room or a sunroom and wish to have it climate controlled you should definitely consider going the ductless route. Similarly, mini-splits are perfect if you're thinking about converting a garage into a "man cave" or turning your attic into a guest bedroom.

Many retirees or empty-nesters who own a large house may not use several of the rooms on a daily basis. With a standard air conditioning system homeowners often close the vent in an unoccupied room. However, it is a poor solution since it may lead to pressure imbalance and mold problems. It is far better to install a ductless AC system in a room you use the most and run your central air system at the minimum settings.
